Ecclesiastical Law

Harris & Harris has been home of the Diocesan Registrar for the Diocese of Bath & Wells for more than 100 years.  In 1997 we were also appointed Diocesan Registrar for the Diocese of Bristol.  Roland Callaby has been appointed personally as Diocesan Registrar and Legal Secretary to the Bishop of Bath & Wells and the Bishop of Bristol.  He is also Secretary of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) of the Diocese of Bath & Wells.  Roland was preceded in these roles by Tim Berry, who was recognised as one of the leading solicitors in the country in this field.

Our work for the two Dioceses involves property transactions, advising on the management of churches & church property, the appointment of clergy & lay officers, disciplinary matters, and issuing marriage licences.  We also provide advice on application for Faculties, which are permissions for work on churches, alterations, and memorials.

Harris & Harris also act for a number of other Anglican & free church organisations throughout England and Wales. Our experience and approachability has helped the management and growth of new churches.

We can also help with Charity Law, Wills, Probate & Trusts, Commercial Property, Employment Law.
